Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Grey-headed Fish Eagle

Kaziranga National Park in Assam hosts two-thirds of the world’s population of Great One-horned, or Indian, Rhinoceros, and is a World Heritage Site. It also has a high density of Tiger, and large populations of Asian Elephants, Wild Water Buffalo and Swamp Deer. Kaziranga is a vast expanse of tall Elephant Grass, marshland and dense tropical moist broadleaved forests, criss-crossed by four major rivers, including the Brahmaputra. On the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, it is a fantastic place for birdwatching, and recognised as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The Park celebrated its centennial in 2005 after its initial establishment in 1905 as a reserve forest.

Itinerary

Day 1: Guwahati to Kaziranga

After arrival in Guwahati, you will be met and driven the c5 hours to Kaziranga, and check in to the famous Wild Grass resort.

Days 2-3: Kaziranga National Park

Two full days will be spent in and around the National Park, for the best mix of mammals, birds, and fantastic scenery. Kaziranga is divided into three ranges. The central range is usually the best to see Indian Rhinoceros, Wild Water Buffalo, Asian Elephant, and Swamp Deer. The eastern range offers some of the most exciting and varied wildlife watching, with a possibility of seeing Otters and, with luck, a Tiger. A great variety of waterfowl should be present at Sohola Bheel, where we also hope to see Greater Adjutant Stork, Pallas’s and Grey-headed Fish Eagles, and Spot-billed Pelican. Other rare specialities of this area include Bengal Florican, Swamp Francolin, Blue-naped Pitta, Great Hornbill, Indian Grassbird, and Finn’s Weaver.

Day 4: Kaziranga to Guwahati

After breakfast, check out and drive to Guwahati for the flight back home.
