Mudumulai National Park and Masinagudi, Tamil Nadu

Blue-bearded Bee-eater

Mudumalai National Park is located in southern India in the state of Tamil Nadu, although it is part of a much larger contiguous forest encompassing Nagarhole in Karnataka and Wayanad in Kerala. Located amidst the Nilgiri foothills, Mudumalai is home to a large variety of birds and mammals, and is a fascinating topography of valleys, plains, hills, forests with teak and rosewood, swamps, and ravines.

Mudumalai is a Tiger reserve and also one of the finest habitats for the Asian Elephant. Wildlife that is likely to be seen also includes Gaur, Sambar, Chital, Barking Deer, and the occasional Tiger or Leopard.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Bangalore and transfer to Mudumalai

From Bangalore you will be driven to Mudumalai. A few brief stops en route, particularly where there is good dry scrub habitat, may produce species such as Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Jerdon’s Bushlark, Blue-winged (Malabar) Parakeet, Small Minivet, Black-headed Cuckooshrike and Ashy-crowned Sparrow Lark. Stay at Jungle Hut, which has excellent birding in its grounds, including the difficult to find endemic Nilgiri Thrush most winters.

Days 2-3: Mudumalai National Park

Two full days will involve plenty of birding in the excellent scrub habitat of Mudumalai, particularly in the Masinagudi area. The regionally scarce White-bellied Minivet will be a key target here, whilst you will also be searching for birds such as Red Spurfowl, Brown Fish Owl, Blue-faced Malkoha, Blue-bearded Bee-eater, White-naped Woodpecker, Indian Pygmy Woodpecker, Indian Nuthatch and Malabar Lark.

Day 4: Mudumalai to Bangalore

After an early morning’s birding and breakfast in Masinagudi, drive back to Bangalore
