Birds and Birding in India

India Checklist

This checklist of the birds of India is based on the official India checklist from Indian BIRDS, but updated to IOC taxonomy. Also see our checklists for every state in India.

The Status column indicates whether a species is Endemic to India, or a Near Endemic, i.e. those species where the vast majority of their population occurs in South Asia (comprising Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the Chagos Archipelago), or neighbouring parts of China and Myanmar.

This checklist is based on actual verified sightings: read more about our eBird-driven checklists. The species name is linked to an information page for the species, the map links to a real-time eBird map, and the IUCN column displays the Red List category.
