Birds and Birding in India

Checklists of the Birds of India by State

Click on the required state below to view its full species checklist, or view the complete India checklist.

All our checklists are based on actual verified sightings and, rather than being simple lists, give relative abundance, or an assessment of the likelihood of seeing each species year-round. Read more about our eBird-driven checklists.

The birds shown in the visual index are the official state birds for each state (and union territory) of India.[1][2] If you don’t know what the bird is from the photo, click through to view the full species checklist and find it there!

  1. The state bird of Jammu and Kashmir prior to Ladakh being declared a separate union territory was Black-necked Crane, which only occurs there and not in the new Jammu and Kashmir union territory. In the absence of a specific state bird being designated we have used Kashmir Flycatcher: surely the most appropriate species anyway?!↩︎
  2. Neither Dadra and Nagar Haveli, nor Daman and Diu, have designated a species.↩︎
